What is the difference between an O-ring and an X-ring?

An O-ring has a circular cross-section and seals by deformation under compression. An X-ring (quad-ring) has a four-lobed cross-section that eliminates spiral failure in reciprocating applications, reduces friction, and provides two sealing contact points per interface. X-rings are preferred over O-rings in dynamic applications where the seal undergoes axial or rotary movement.

What O-ring material is best for hydraulic systems?

NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is the standard material for general hydraulic systems using mineral oil or water-glycol fluids, rated to 120 °C. HNBR is preferred in high-temperature or sour-gas hydraulic applications up to 150 °C. FKM is used where the hydraulic fluid is a fire-resistant phosphate ester or where temperatures exceed 150 °C.

What is the difference between FKM and FFKM O-rings?

FKM (Fluorocarbon) provides broad chemical resistance and operates up to 200 °C. FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer) provides near-universal chemical resistance and operates up to 300 °C. FFKM is specified for aggressive chemical process and critical oilfield applications where FKM is not chemically compatible.

Can Santoo manufacture O-rings to custom sizes?

Yes. Santoo manufactures O-rings, X-rings, and V-rings to custom dimensions from in-house elastomer compounds at its KEZAD, Abu Dhabi facility. Custom profiles are cut or moulded to drawing with typical lead times of 24–72 hours for GCC customers.

What O-ring materials are approved for potable water applications?

For potable water applications, EPDM and WRAS-listed elastomers are the standard specification. NSF-approved compounds (NSF/ANSI 61) are used where direct contact with drinking water is required. Santoo supplies NSF-approved and WRAS-listed O-rings from its in-house compound range.

What is an API 6A O-ring compound?

API 6A is the American Petroleum Institute standard for wellhead and Christmas tree equipment. API 6A O-ring compounds meet specific material requirements for oilfield service including resistance to H2S, CO2, and high-pressure hydrocarbon environments. Santoo manufactures and stocks API 6A certified elastomer compounds for O-rings and custom sealing applications.

Santoo manufactures O-rings, X-rings (quad-rings), and V-rings from in-house elastomer compounds developed at our KEZAD facility. Standard sizes are stocked across all listed materials. Non-standard profiles and bespoke dimensions are cut or moulded to drawing with typical lead times of 24–72 hours for GCC customers.

X-rings carry a four-lipped sealing profile that prevents spiral failure in reciprocating applications and delivers lower friction than an equivalent O-ring. V-rings provide axial sealing on rotating shafts and are self-compensating for wear.

All API 6A and NSF compounds are batch-traceable. Material certificates and test reports are issued on request.
