Why rod condition determines seal life
A hydraulic rod is a running surface. The rod wiper and rod seal run against it on every stroke. Pitting, scoring, and corrosion on the rod surface destroy seal life from the outside in — independently of bore condition or seal material.
Hard chrome restoration returns the rod to a mirror-polished, dimensionally correct running surface. The chrome layer provides hardness and corrosion resistance. Post-chrome polishing brings the surface to Ra 0.2 µm — the finish a rod seal requires to reach its rated service life.
Conditions assessed at intake
- Pit depth and distribution — determines chrome thickness required
- Scoring pattern — indicates contamination source for root-cause report
- Straightness — rod bow measured per metre, correction threshold 0.1 mm/m
- Existing chrome condition — delamination, underplating, or previous repair
