Seal material selection for GCC industrial conditions

NBR, HNBR, FKM, EPDM, PTFE, FFKM — each compound has defined operating limits. This guide covers the properties relevant to hydraulic and industrial sealing in GCC conditions: sustained high ambient temperature, aggressive process media, and continuous-plant duty cycles.

NBR — Nitrile butadiene rubber Petroleum hydraulic oils. To ~100°C continuous. Not for phosphate ester or H₂S
HNBR — Hydrogenated nitrile Petroleum oils, H₂S, sour gas. To ~150°C. Upstream oil and gas standard
FKM — Fluoroelastomer (Viton) Petroleum, synthetic fluids, chemicals, H₂S. To ~200°C. Higher cost
EPDM — Ethylene propylene Water, steam, phosphate ester. Not for petroleum oils
FFKM — Perfluoroelastomer Near-universal chemical resistance. Extreme temperature. Critical process plant
PTFE — Polytetrafluoroethylene Low friction, wide chemical resistance. Guide rings, static seals, back-up rings
PEEK — Polyether ether ketone High stiffness, high temperature. Wear rings and guide elements

Compound temperature ratings assume moderate ambient conditions — typically 20–25°C. In GCC industrial environments, sustained outdoor ambient temperatures of 40–50°C, combined with direct sun loading on reservoirs and cylinders, produce effective seal surface temperatures significantly higher than hydraulic circuit oil temperature alone.

An NBR seal rated to 100°C continuous reaches that limit faster in a GCC cement plant or offshore installation than it would in a European facility running the same hydraulic system. Maintenance intervals based on European published specifications should be reviewed for GCC applications.
